My mother used to make batidos (smoothies) when I was a little girl. Cuban style smoothie recipes are a totally different experience. They're made with whole milk, tropical fruits AND sugar! They are rich and sweet but will give you a total sugar high. These are way healthier and tasty too!
Smoothie Recipe Tips
Here are some tips I've picked up by playing around with making smoothie recipes. I've been doing this for at least 20 years.
- Liquids First. When blending, add the liquid to the blender first. Then add your frozen fruit combo to the top of the liquid. Blend. Enjoy.
- Cut Prep Time. As a time saver, I freeze coconut milk and orange juice in ice trays and store in freezer bags. I also slice very ripe bananas, freeze, and store in freezer bags. When I make smoothies I use them to add thickness, texture, and taste.
- Adjust Nutrients. You may be trying to manage your sugar, fat and protein intake. You can tweak any smoothie recipe. Add protein: chia seeds, hemp seeds, oats, peanut butter, yogurt or protein powder. High glycemic fruits like bananas add a LOT of sweetness (especially if they're super ripe) but they also add a lot of sugar. So does dried fruit like apricots and dates. You can try tweaking the recipes by playing with portions, perhaps adding half of a banana instead of a whole one, or swapping out for lower glycemic fruits like apples and pears. Healthy fats can easily be added by using coconut oil, flax seeds and chia seeds which are easily available.

Remember to drink slowly. Swirl it around in your mouth so that you stimulate the release of digestive enzymes. Chewing helps release nutrients. The more you chew, the more nutrients you get.
Enjoy the melt in your mouth goodness! Let me know if you make any tweaks to the recipes.
